When I was a little girl, I was very athletic and physically fit. Growing up, I was a dancer and a gymnast, practicing every day after school and on weekends. During junior high and high school I was a cheerleader which was also a physically demanding sport.
At the age of 16, I discovered weight lifting and aerobics classes. I became an aerobics instructor and also started training others in weight lifting. Throughout my 20’s and 30’s I continued to weight train and take or teach fitness classes. By the time I was 28 years old, I had 3 children, and I looked amazing. But looks can be very deceiving. Even though I looked great, I was not healthy at all. I maintained my weight by excessive exercise, food deprivation, diet pills, bulimia, smoking and diet drinks/ foods.
That lifestyle took its toll on my body and it caught up with me big time. Fast forward to my late 30’s and mid 40’s, by this time, I had gone thru a divorce and taken on a new (very stressful) career with a fortune 500 company. My workouts became less and less to eventually non existent and long 12 to 14 hour work days took over. Also during this time all of my insecurities had reached an all time high, I was super depressed, I did not like me, I hated the person who looked back at me in the mirror. No one knew this though, I hid it very well. And with that added stress of the job, the insecurities and depression, I abused my body, I drank a lot, smoked and I would go through periods of starvation or binge eating.
You can only mistreat your body for so long before it just can't keep up ……….And here is what happened.
I really believed that for the rest of my life, I was destined to just exist. I would forever be overweight, I had lost the quality of life I once had, I had no energy, I was in to much pain from my back to do the things I used to enjoy doing, I hated my job, I didn't like myself.........and the list goes on. But food did give me comfort, even though I was ALWAYS on a “diet, I would turn to those comfort foods and tell myself, “I’ll do better tomorrow”. Yep, that really worked for me, Not!!
In July 2015, I decided enough was enough and began a weight loss program, one that required me to go to weekly meetings, and I did lose some weight. Then I ended up having back surgery and the only thing I wanted to eat after that, I kid you not, was coke floats. Breakfast, lunch and dinner it was coke floats. However, once I was able to start moving around and get off the pain medication, I felt like eating real food again. This time I started a different weight loss program and it was so restrictive on what I could and couldn’t eat, I was miserable.
So I dug around in my closet and found my Beachbody, 21 Day Fix Program, I had ordered several years ago and never used, and decided it was time to give it a try. I started following the 21 Day Fix diet plan and drinking Shakology, however I was not able to do the workouts because I was still recovering from my back surgery and I also found out had a torn Labrum in my right hip and couldn't even take short walks for exercise.
Eventually, I was able to start moving a little bit. I started out just walking 10 minutes a day and worked my way up until I was able to start doing the 21 Day Fix work out program. I had to start out very slow and I had to modify the modifications in the video to accommodate my physical limitations. And eventually I got stronger and the weight was being replaced with muscle.........take a look at me now, I am down 30 lbs and I feel fabulous.
Because I am eating a healthier diet, I have less inflammation in my body, I can move around easier and my joints don’t hurt like they did before. I have fewer stomach issues because eating a proper diet and Shakology have restored my gut health. Cleaning up my diet and incorporating exercise into my daily life has eliminated my depression and desire to drink. Oh and I have not smoked a cigarette for over 6 years.
I remember praying to God, begging Him to take the spirit of depression and addiction from me.
I believe Beachbody was His answer to my prayers. And I believe He allowed me to go thru my past so I can help others who are in similar situations, so I can Pay it Forward! And give him the Glory!!
I still have more weight to lose, but I am so proud of what I have accomplished so far.
